The soccer team failed to reach the state final four after starting the season with an impressive nine game shutout streak, and high hopes for a third straight soccer title.

The team finished with a 20-6 regular season record and won the district championship for the 25th straight year.

“They have a lot to be proud of this year after losing eight players from the 2009 class.  I’m proud that they were able to keep the tradition and program of a nationally known soccer program alive,” Mr. Chris Lawson, head coach, said.

After the Hawklets beat them once before, Lee’s Summit North won in the sectional game 2-1 in penalty kicks.

“We had four breakaways and one on ones and we just could not score and that really was the difference,” senior Paul Pisani said.

Regardless of the close loss, the squad was able to win half of its games by one goal, in overtime or in penalty kicks.  This ability to win close games was one of the team’s strengths throughout the year.

Even though it could finish games, according to Coach Lawson, the team seemed to lack focus within games, at times resulting to some offensive struggles.

“Our offense was heavily challenged this year with the loss of past players and we had a very challenging, demanding schedule this season, which affected the offense,” Coach Lawson said.

The question for the team is how they will respond to having a longer off-season than in years past.  And with only losing six seniors, next year’s squad is determined to make their push back to St. Louis.
