The Multi-Ethnic Educational Team club has decided to sponsor a new event, a basketball tournament, under the guidance of its new moderator, Mr. Larry Ruby, principal.

Preliminary games have been held this week to help with seeding for the tournament, which will begin on Nov. 2.

Teams will be split into two different divisions, one consisting of freshmen and sophomores and the other of juniors and seniors.

As of Wednesday, the freshman and sophomore bracket has three teams and the junior and senior bracket has four teams, according to senior Harrison Herndon, MEET club president.

With sign ups ending today, MEET club is hoping to get a grand total of 20 teams in the tournament, but the games will continue even if that is not achieved.

“Athletics in and of themselves have been used as a way to promote diversity, so we have decided to tap into that well,” Herndon said.

And this tournament is aimed towards accomplishing just that.

“The real challenge in society, and in any school such as this, is to promote harmony and understanding as best you can. It doesn’t mean we won’t have conflict, but I feel the goal of the MEET club is to provide a common ground,” Mr. Ruby said.

Since there are two different brackets for the tournament, each bracket will have its’ own prize.

The prize for the team that wins the freshman and sophomore bracket is four tickets to any Chiefs game.

The prize for the winning team of the junior and senior bracket is four tickets to any Sprint Center event.

“We tried to find something interesting and exciting. The Chiefs tickets were a good idea because even though [the Chiefs] aren’t good, its still fun to go to the games; and a lot of people like going to the Sprint Center,” junior Myles Swoopes, MEET club vice president, said.
