As part of their effort to revamp the spirit contest, the SGA instituted the Color Wars this year. Each of the classes stays in dress code but is assigned a specific colored shirt to wear. Seniors wear blue, juniors white, sophomores red, and freshman green.
“Most students can get their classes color and since they keep their color all four years it won’t be unfair for students, “ junior Billy Maloney said.
With two contests down, seniors are up, having taken first place in both of the contests. They won the most recent contest with 93 percent of seniors wearing the correct color.
“It was…derived from Pembroke’s Color War competition,” Matthew Gude, SGA president said.
In the future the SGA looks towards expanding the idea, similar to Pembroke’s in which the different classes actually compete in a sort of field day.
This is not going to happen this year and may not even be possible in the near future, but Gude is hopeful.
“Our hope is that the Color Wars is another form of class unity and a chance for the class to have a unifying thing, because a class keeps their color for four years. It will be a slow process, but hopefully in years to come color wars can become a big part of the Rockhurst tradition. That’s up to the future leaders,” Gude said.
Students who have experienced the Spirit contest previously are responding favorably.
“I like it, it is an easy way for students to show school spirit while staying in dress code, “ senior Patrick Williamson said.
Freshman who are new to the idea also share their enthusiasm.
“It’s legit because we get to compete with other classes, and its cool seeing everyone wearing the same color,” freshman Keegan McRoberts said.
